Marcos Galperin, the long-serving CEO of Mercado Libre, announced a significant leadership change within the company. After 26 years at the helm, Galperin will transition to the role of Executive Chairman on January 1, 2026. Ariel Szarfsztejn is set to succeed him as CEO.
In a message to employees, Galperin expressed his confidence in Szarfsztejn's ability to lead Mercado Libre into its next phase. "I am absolutely convinced that Ariel Szarfsztejn is the right person to lead this new stage as CEO of MELI," he stated. Szarfsztejn joined Mercado Libre in 2017 and has held various roles, including leading logistics development across Latin America and heading the Marketplace division for the past three years.
Galperin reflected on his decision-making process, noting that he had considered stepping down at various points over the years but ultimately prioritized what was best for the company. He emphasized that ensuring a smooth transition was crucial for maintaining Mercado Libre's competitive edge in an industry characterized by rapid change.
He highlighted Mercado Libre's current strong position in terms of scale, growth, profitability, strategic positioning, financial strength, technology, and market presence. Galperin believes this transition will allow Mercado Libre to continue its trajectory as a dynamic and innovative leader in Latin America.
In concluding his message, Galperin thanked those who have supported him throughout his journey with Mercado Libre. "Thank you to everyone who has accompanied me on this journey: users, investors, partners, colleagues, employees, directors, friends, and many others," he said.
