CAF - Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean - has approved a grant of USD 700,000 to support Barbados in reducing water losses and modernizing its drinking water infrastructure. The technical cooperation agreement will fund studies, engineering designs, and tender documentation aimed at improving water delivery to meet the growing needs of Barbadians.
The agreement was signed at the Barbados Water Authority's Head Office in Bridgetown by Prime Minister Mia Mottley, CAF's Regional Manager for the Caribbean Dr. Stacy Richards-Kennedy, and Acting CEO of the Barbados Water Authority Christopher Mapp. The funding comes from CAF’s Water Sector Pre-Investment Program (PPSA), which assists governments in strengthening water security and service delivery.
Prime Minister Mia Mottley emphasized the importance of addressing non-revenue water as part of climate resilience efforts. She expressed gratitude to CAF for its financial and technical support, noting that "non-revenue water...remains a major challenge" due to aging infrastructure. "This grant from CAF will support the Barbados Water Authority to better manage the network and help reduce those losses," she stated.
Dr. Stacy Richards-Kennedy remarked on CAF's ongoing commitment: “Water is one of the most essential resources. CAF has been a proud partner in supporting Barbados' efforts to strengthen its water sector." She added that this cooperation demonstrates their dedication to building an efficient and resilient system.
This initiative follows a high-level workshop by CAF on Caribbean water challenges, where regional issues were discussed alongside innovative solutions. Additionally, CAF has supported other projects like the USD 10 million Barbados Water Rehabilitation Project aimed at upgrading infrastructure for over 80,000 residents.
