C&W Networks commissions 3,700-mile submarine cable

C&W Networks, one of the largest telecommunications service providers in the Caribbean, on Thursday announced that Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks has finished the commissioning of the Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS).

"This is a very exciting development for the region as it further strengthens and expands the region's telecom infrastructure," C&W Networks President Paul Scott said.

The 3,700-mile submarine cable connects Aruba, Colombia,  Curacao, Ecuador, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands to Jacksonville, Florida.

PCCS is C&W Networks' fourth international submarine cable landing in the United States and its third in Florida. This system heightens C&W Networks' ongoing commitment for ecosystem diversity and industry leading network resiliency.

"We are very excited to be part of this new submarine cable system,” Scott said. “It allows us to provide our carrier customers more traffic routing possibilities, ensuring complete geo-route diversity to the U.S. East Coast. Besides additional ring diversity, PCCS also provides a new, geographically diverse cable landing in the U.S. in Jacksonville, Florida, as an added layer of redundancy and network interconnection.”

The PCCS has a design capacity of 80 terabits-per-second and works to boost connectivity and increase the availability of broadband services. PCCS is owned by Cable & Wireless Communications, Setar, Telconet, Telefonica Global Solutions and United Telecommunication Services.
