Voto Latino issued the following announcement on April 16.

Voto Latino enthusiastically announces its endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden for President of the United States. Vice President Biden’s deep commitment to public service exemplifies democratic ideals. He is the best candidate to lead the United States out of four years of a crisis presidency that has jeopardized our institutions and leadership at home and abroad. Over his long and distinguished career, Mr. Biden has shown he will be an engaged leader for the Latinx community.

“Donald Trump has been a threat to the Latinx community from the moment he descended the escalator to announce his candidacy in 2015. The very foundation of his presidential campaign was based on threats to the Latino community,” said Voto Latino Founding President and CEO, María Teresa Kumar. “Since entering office, he has wreaked havoc, from caging children to creating a denaturalization task force. Even in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, he continues to vilify our community, and has not shown any empathy for the disproportionate number of Latinx people impacted by the virus. And, he has prevented Latinx citizens from collecting relief–if even one family or household member is undocumented–and attempted to lower wages of essential farmworkers. He is an existential threat to the future of the Latinx community, which is the second largest and youngest voting bloc in the country. That is why it is so critical that we register as many Latinx voters as possible for the 2020 election.

“Joe Biden has demonstrated his ability to lead and stabilize the country in times of crisis,” added Ms. Kumar. “This endorsement is not one that Voto Latino takes lightly–as it is the first one in our organization’s history. However, as an organization charged with enfranchising Latino voters and protecting their rights, we must meet the moment and acknowledge the clear and present danger our current president poses to the Latinx community. Voto Latino is extremely pleased to support Vice President Joe Biden in his campaign to make Donald Trump a one-term president.”

“Voto Latino also thanks Senator Bernie Sanders for all he has done to lead on so many of the social justice issues critical to our community,” concluded Ms. Kumar. “Senator Sanders has been a tireless advocate for our people. We will always be grateful for how he has materially changed the debate in order to place our core issues front and center. His endorsement of Vice President Biden allows us to all move forward in a unified and enthusiastic manner.”

The endorsement is made by Voto Latino, the 501(c)(4) arm of the Voto Latino Foundation, which works to educate, engage and empower Latinx through voter registration and political representation.
