Uruguay has added the Manantiales Serranos Geopark to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, effective April 15. The area, located in the southeast of Uruguay and known for its mountain ranges, waterways, and biodiversity, has received international recognition for its geological and cultural significance.
The inclusion of Manantiales Serranos in this network is seen as a strategic opportunity for Uruguay. It is expected to boost regional development by attracting geotourism and supporting sustainable economic growth through job creation and strengthened local tourism ventures.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network connects regions that manage their geological heritage with a focus on education, conservation, and sustainable development. The new designation highlights coordinated efforts among public institutions, technical teams, and local communities to protect and promote the area.
Officials say this milestone consolidates Uruguay’s position as a destination committed to sustainable tourism. The recognition also encourages policies aimed at responsible management of natural heritage while promoting local knowledge and traditions.
According to information from the Ministry of Tourism based on details about the Manantiales Serranos Geopark, “Manantiales Serranos thus establishes itself as a space where science, education, and tourism converge, offering a unique experience for domestic and international visitors interested in authentic and sustainable experiences.”
The announcement marks what officials describe as the beginning of a new era for both the region and country in preserving natural heritage now recognized globally.
