Juan Pomés, partner at Dechamps International Law, said on Apr. 1 that Uruguay’s stability and predictability were key factors in the firm’s decision to establish an office in the WTC Montevideo Free Zone. Pomés made these remarks during an interview published by WTC Montevideo on its YouTube channel.
Uruguay is increasingly becoming a hub for global service centers in Latin America. These centers allow multinational companies, regional firms, and startups to coordinate their operations across the continent from a central location. Functions such as regional headquarters, shared services, trading, distribution, and specialized corporate services are often managed from these platforms.
The country offers political and economic stability as well as legal certainty for foreign investors. Uruguay holds an investment-grade rating and provides clear rules for doing business. Foreign investors receive equal treatment compared to local businesses and benefit from the free movement of capital.
Uruguay’s strategic location enables companies based there to serve both Brazil and Spanish-speaking countries throughout Latin America. Regional trade agreements also provide access to a market of more than 400 million consumers.
Dechamps International Law chose Montevideo to complement its offices in London and Buenos Aires due to this favorable context. The firm specializes in dispute resolution and international arbitration with teams of lawyers across its locations.
Pomés said that talent availability was another important factor: “The availability of talent is very important. There are excellent universities and law schools in Montevideo, and Uruguay has become a business hub for the Latin American region.”
More than 100 global service centers now operate in Uruguay, employing thousands of professionals trained at top-tier universities with strong language skills suitable for international environments.
