The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) announced on March 17 that its Termogas Machala II thermal power plant has increased its operational capacity by bringing a gas generator back into service, adding 20 megawatts (MW) to the national electricity supply.
This development is significant as it supports the reliability of Ecuador’s energy system. The restored generator will help meet the country’s electricity needs and reinforce energy security.
According to CELEC EP, the generator underwent major maintenance in specialized workshops in Germany. The process included a comprehensive inspection, replacement of critical parts, and technical tests conducted under strict industry standards for power generation equipment. The generator is part of a General Electric TM2500 unit, which allows components to be installed interchangeably among similar units. After returning from Germany, the refurbished equipment was installed in unit TM2 at the Machala II plant. The previously used generator from TM2 will now be sent abroad for similar maintenance.
Currently, CELEC EP operates two units at the Bajo Alto thermal park. Two additional units are nearing completion of their maintenance in Germany. In the coming days, CELEC EP plans to send the original gas generator from unit TM2 overseas for refurbishment, completing this phase of its repowering program for the thermal park.
CELEC EP said these efforts are part of a broader government initiative to strengthen Ecuador’s energy security by using natural gas for electricity generation.
