The city of Zaruma in El Oro province marked two significant dates on the calendar of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture: the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The events included an educational and cultural fair. Hundreds of students participated in a parade and took part in artistic activities that focused on messages promoting inclusion and ending violence.
Henry Valle, from DECE District 07D03, stated that other government agencies and the municipal government also helped organize the event. “Our objective is to stop all types of gender violence. With our actions we fight to defend the right to a dignified life,” he said.
Maritza Bersoza, a member of the Unit for Support to Inclusion (UDAI), explained that the event aimed to promote values such as respect and solidarity among students with special educational needs, whether or not they are associated with disabilities.
In El Oro province, there are currently 572 students enrolled in specialized educational institutions. Another 517 children and young people attend regular schools.
Roberth Paul Zambrano, a student at San Juan Bosco Educational Unit, addressed citizens by saying: “to look beyond appearances, and understand that true inclusion begins when we recognize that we are different but equal in rights. Inclusion is not a value or an option; it is a moral commitment and a social responsibility.”
The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture continues to promote inclusive education through policies, programs, and specific actions designed to ensure access, retention, and learning for all students while recognizing diversity.
