Uruguay has expanded its diplomatic footprint in Asia with the inauguration of a Consulate General in Hong Kong. The new office, which also covers the Macao Special Administrative Region, was opened by Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin. The formal ceremony was attended by officials from both China and Uruguay.
During the event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the significance of this development for relations between Uruguay and Hong Kong within the framework of the comprehensive strategic alliance that links Uruguay and China.
Cui Jianchun, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Hong Kong; John Lee, Chief Executive of Hong Kong; Fernando Lugris, Ambassador of Uruguay to China; and Federico Lage, Consul General of Uruguay in Hong Kong were present at the ceremony.
The consular office aims to assist over eight million residents in the region while promoting trade to attract investment and enhance exports within the Greater Bay Area. This area is home to 86 million people and is establishing itself as a significant economic hub.
This move aligns with Uruguay’s strategy to strengthen ties with China and increase its presence in key Asian economic centers. The opening of this consulate underscores Uruguay’s commitment to fostering trade and bilateral cooperation.
