The Trinitaria Thermoelectric Plant has resumed operations with a capacity of 125 megawatts (MW) after nine years of technical restrictions. This development follows maintenance efforts led by the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador and the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The Electric Corporation of Ecuador (CELEC EP) completed scheduled major maintenance, restoring 40 MW that had previously been unavailable.
The rehabilitation project required an investment of $18.1 million and was carried out by CELEC EP Electroguayas Business Unit. Work began on May 28, 2025, and concluded after 176 days. The project generated temporary employment for 180 people, including residents from nearby communities.
Key actions included replacing tubes and structural maintenance on the boiler, upgrading the Turbine Distributed Control System (DCS), installing a new feedwater pump for the boiler, and performing steam blowing according to manufacturer protocols before bringing the unit back online.
With this unit now ready to supply energy as needed by the National Electricity Operator (CENACE), the reliability and stability of the power system serving Guayaquil and other parts of Ecuador is expected to improve.
“The Government of El Nuevo Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to modernize and strengthen the national electrical system, ensuring efficiency and energy sustainability for Ecuadorians,” according to an official statement.
