Peruvian photographer Santiago Junior Romaní Rodríguez has won the documentary photography competition at the first edition of the Verano Vienés – Latin American Photo & Film Fest in Vienna. Romaní, who is from Pucallpa in the Ucayali region, was recognized for his work titled “Ucayali bajo el agua: crónica visual de las inundaciones en Pucallpa.” The piece documents the impact of floods that took place in March 2025 in the Amazon region and highlights how local communities responded to challenges brought by climate change.

The festival aims to connect Latin America and Europe through Latin American documentary photography and film. It brings together works that reflect social, territorial, environmental, and cultural processes from the region. The event is supported by the Embassy of Peru in Austria.

According to organizers, Romaní’s work emphasizes “the resilience and dignity of local communities facing the challenges of climate change.”
