Uruguay has received international attention in a recent Monocle feature that focuses on the country’s east coast, particularly Punta del Este. The article describes Punta del Este as “a destination shaped by creativity and quiet sophistication,” where “art and cinema thrive alongside refined hospitality.” According to Monocle, the area attracts an international audience to “a coastal haven where ideas flow freely and life feels full of opportunity.”

The magazine highlights José Ignacio, emphasizing the strong connection between visitors, the natural landscape, and the local community. Felice Kofler, manager of Posada Ayana, a 21-room hotel in José Ignacio, said: “immediately you feel at ease and connected to the place and the people.” She noted that more guests are choosing to settle or invest in the area. “Guests are becoming locals in José Ignacio,” she said, adding that many are inspired to buy property. “There’s a lightness,” Kofler added.

Monocle also covers Uruguay’s film industry ambitions, with particular attention to the José Ignacio International Film Festival (JIIFF). Fiona Pittaluga, co-founder of JIIFF, explained how the festival fosters shared cultural experiences: “Uruguayans make visitors feel near and included.” She described its atmosphere as having “a combination of freedom and closeness.” The article points out that year-round initiatives are attracting global streaming platforms to Uruguay. These efforts are supported by public policy measures and tax incentives.

Uruguay’s Country Brand has provided support for JIIFF since it began, acknowledging its role in enhancing Uruguay’s presence on the international cultural stage.

In visual arts, Monocle profiles Laura Bardier, founder of Este Arte contemporary art fair. Bardier established Este Arte to strengthen the region’s artistic scene. She stated it is possible to create “a tailor-made model” and “a human-scale, sustainable and excellent art market” within Uruguay.

Like JIIFF, Este Arte has received backing from Uruguay’s Country Brand since its early editions. This support aims to boost global recognition for Uruguay’s creative industries.

Monocle concludes that Uruguay stands out as a place where culture, creativity, and quality of life come together—offering opportunities for investment and collaboration.
