The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (MINTEL) marked International Data Protection Day on January 28, highlighting the importance of personal data protection for both public and private sector employees, as well as the general public.
International Data Protection Day commemorates the signing of Convention 108 by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, in 1981. This agreement was the first international treaty to establish binding rules for handling personal data.
MINTEL emphasized that protecting personal data is a fundamental human right recognized in various national laws and international agreements. In Ecuador, the Organic Law on Personal Data Protection sets clear guidelines for using personal information and ensures rights such as control, security, and responsible use of data.
“From the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (MINTEL), we promote compliance with this current regulation and a responsible and secure Digital Transformation,” MINTEL stated.
The ministry also encouraged citizens to safeguard their personal information, describing it as an intrinsic part of each individual. “The Organic Law on Personal Data Protection guarantees rights so that citizens can access and protect their information. Knowing this right is fundamental in the digital world that society lives in,” MINTEL added.
