The Marcel Laniado de Wind Hydroelectric Plant, with a capacity of 213 megawatts, has begun scheduled maintenance on its three generation units. The plant is part of the Jaime Roldós Aguilera Multipurpose Complex and is located in El Empalme, Guayas province. Maintenance started on January 30, 2026, and will last for 19 days. The work is being carried out by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) and involves corrective actions on the plant’s hydraulic equipment.
According to Inés Manzano, Minister of Environment and Energy, the country currently has enough electricity supply to cover national demand during this period. “Ecuador is switched on. Strategic planning allows us to carry out these works that strengthen our electrical system. We have put all our thermal and hydroelectric plants at maximum capacity. We are fine; we are switched on,” she said.
Technical staff from CELEC EP Hidronación Business Unit will perform maintenance on three butterfly valves over the next 19 days. These valves are key components that regulate water flow into turbines and help protect the entire hydraulic system.
This intervention follows a technical plan aimed at improving operational safety, reliability of the electric system, and continuity of service. Technical and operational criteria were considered to minimize any impact on the national grid, particularly in the Manabí region.
During maintenance, an ecological flow rate of 92 cubic meters per second will be maintained to ensure continued water supply for drinking water production in several cantons in Guayas province.
The government of El Nuevo Ecuador and CELEC EP reaffirmed their commitment to responsible management of electrical infrastructure by prioritizing preventive actions that help avoid unplanned failures and guarantee reliable service for citizens.
