The Gun community in San Andrés de Taday parish, Cañar province, now has a sanitary sewer system and a wastewater treatment plant. This project benefits 344 residents living near the Mazar and Alazán power plants, which are operated by CELEC Sur.

The infrastructure was completed with an investment of USD 192,158 provided by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP). The project was carried out through an agreement that included technical oversight from the Empresa Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de Azogues (EMAPAL EP) and support from the local parish government of San Andrés de Taday.

According to the press release, this development addresses previous issues related to unsanitary conditions, unpleasant odors, and environmental impacts. The new system aims to improve public health and quality of life for families in the area.

The project involved installing 30 wastewater treatment systems over 27.65 hectares. For families living in more remote locations, individual biodigesters were installed to ensure comprehensive coverage suited to local needs.

This initiative is part of CELEC Sur’s Community Relations Plan and expands rural sewer coverage in Azogues. Rosa Sucuzhañay, a resident of the community, said: “After a decade of waiting, our dream comes true thanks to CELEC EP; we had a provisional sewer that caused pollution and discomfort in the neighborhood, but now we see real change for us and future generations.”

Miguel Andrade, manager of CELEC Sur Business Unit, commented on the company’s work under the direction of El Nuevo Ecuador government: “This work is possible thanks to the commitment of El Nuevo Ecuador Government, which has been clear in its message: development must come with real, concrete and sustainable actions to territories. From CELEC EP we work so that this commitment becomes reality.”

With these efforts, both CELEC EP and El Nuevo Ecuador government state their intention to promote sustainable development and improve living conditions through responsible energy management and engagement with local communities.
