Student participation and improvements to school infrastructure were the focus of a recent event in Gualaceo, where local authorities, students, and the educational community joined efforts to promote democracy and improve education quality.
At the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Private Educational Unit, about 80 students from various schools took part in district meetings of Student Councils. They used the “La Voz del Cambio” methodology, which encouraged dialogue, idea exchange, and reflection on democracy, civic participation, and optional voting. The initiative aimed to help build a critical and active citizenry.
In terms of infrastructure, a new auditorium was inaugurated at Alfonso Lituma Correa Educational Unit. This facility will serve 725 students. The project was funded with USD 15,000 from the Municipality of Gualaceo and supported by parents and the District Education Office 01D04 Gualaceo–Chordeleg. The new space is intended for academic, cultural, and community activities.
José Luis Romero, district director, said: “The investment in educational infrastructure creates dignified environments that enhance learning and strengthen the entire educational community.”
Marcela Villavicencio, Zonal Education Coordinator for Zone 6, emphasized inter-institutional cooperation: “This allows us to improve educational infrastructure and create dignified spaces that directly benefit girls, boys, and adolescents.”
The day ended at Nicanor Aguilar Maldonado Educational Unit in San Juan parish with the opening of renovated sanitary facilities—19 restrooms and 11 sinks—which are expected to provide safer and healthier conditions for students.
These initiatives demonstrate the ongoing commitment of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture to promote student participation, strengthen school infrastructure nationwide, and deliver quality education to citizens.
