Goldcorp Inc. recently decommissioned its El Sauzal mine in Mexico following the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC).

The mine, in the Mexican state of

Chihuahua,  will now be withdrawn from the ICMC, a voluntary program developed by the United Nations Environment Program for the production of gold using cyanide.

El Sauzal
was the first mine in Mexico to be fully certified by the ICMC in March 2008; the mine was recertified in July 2011 and December 2014.

“Goldcorp was the first gold-mining company in the world to have each of its wholly owned mines certified under the ICMC, so it is appropriate that we have become the first to successfully decommission a gold mine under the auspices of the ICMC,” Goldcorp President and CEO

Chuck Jeannes
said. “This represents an important step forward in Goldcorp’s commitment to safe, responsible operations throughout the entire life cycle of our projects.”

A leading gold producer, Goldcorp, headquarterd in Canada, mines with safe, low-cost production in the Americas.
