The Council of the Judiciary held an event titled “With Justice, Art and Education: We Weave Equality and Respect” at the North Judicial Complex to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The gathering included authorities, judges, judicial staff, and members of the public.

Gina Gómez De La Torre, national director of Access to Justice Services, opened the event by stressing the need for both institutional and social responsibility in preventing violence. She stated that justice is not limited to courtrooms but also arises from educational, cultural, and community processes that foster equality and respect.

A forum called “Women in Justice: Professional Practice, Structural Barriers and Building Equality” was part of the program. Participants included Magaly Ruiz Cajas, a member of the Council of the Judiciary; Daniella Camacho Herold, judge of the National Court of Justice; and Silvia Juma, prosecutor.

Ruiz addressed ongoing challenges related to violence against women. She said: “Men not only can but must be part of the solution. Silence has been complicit for too long. We need actions, commitment and real changes in culture and relationships. We are not destined to survive but to live in freedom.”

At the end of the event, attendees made symbolic commitments to non-violence and access to justice with a rights-based approach.

This initiative is part of broader institutional efforts aimed at ensuring timely, accessible, and specialized support for women who have survived violence throughout Ecuador.
