Colombia has once again secured its position as a leading nation in bird biodiversity by recording 1,560 bird species during the Global Big Day 2025. This event is organized by the scientific platform eBird and held in over 200 countries annually to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day. Colombia’s achievement outpaced Peru and Brazil, with counts of 1,399 and 1,245 species respectively.
In addition to this ecological milestone, Colombian tourism has reached a significant high. In 2024, more than 6.8 million international visitors traveled to the country, setting a historic record. The United States remains the primary source of these tourists, making Colombia the top South American destination for U.S. travelers.
The departments of Meta, Antioquia, Putumayo, Valle del Cauca, and Caldas played key roles in contributing to the bird count. These regions offer diverse ecosystems such as rainforests and high-altitude páramos that attract birdwatchers worldwide.
Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia, commented on this success: “This achievement confirms Colombia’s incredible natural richness and our commitment to sustainability.” She emphasized that birdwatching is an important part of sustainable development in Colombia.
With over 1,900 bird species including 79 endemics, Colombia’s strategic location along migratory routes offers unique opportunities for birding experiences. The tourism sector has developed infrastructure like eco-lodges and scenic trails specifically for birdwatchers.
ProColombia has been instrumental in promoting these initiatives by launching specialized birding routes and participating in global fairs like the Global Bird Fair. They have also hosted familiarization trips with tour operators from the U.S. and U.K., which are Colombia’s main international tourism markets.
The focus on birdwatching not only aids conservation but also provides income for local communities by connecting tourists with Colombia’s landscapes and wildlife.
