Micro, small, and medium-sized businesses in Colombia are being encouraged by Bancóldex to take advantage of the recent drop in the value of the US dollar. The exchange rate has reached levels not seen since mid-2021, presenting opportunities for companies to strengthen their operations and manage their finances more effectively.

Bancóldex, Colombia’s development bank, outlined four recommendations for business owners under these currency conditions. The first suggestion is to invest in machinery, equipment, and raw materials. With the current exchange rate, businesses can acquire capital goods that may improve efficiency and competitiveness. The bank offers an Import Leasing tool to help finance purchases of imported productive assets.

The second recommendation focuses on technology and digitalization. Business owners are advised to consider importing technology to automate processes and reduce production costs. This includes software as well as digitalization and cybersecurity tools.

Thirdly, Bancóldex advises evaluating the use of currency hedging instruments. These tools are designed to counteract exchange rate volatility by allowing entrepreneurs or investors to set a future price for foreign currency transactions. This helps protect against fluctuations that could impact their business deals.

The fourth recommendation is for businesses that sell products in dollars: review pricing strategies and explore new markets with stronger currencies. Bancóldex highlights financing mechanisms available for foreign buyers of Colombian goods and services. These allow exporters to receive immediate payment while mitigating risks associated with declining dollar values when payments are made over time.

José Alberto Garzón, acting president of Bancóldex, stated: “The invitation that we make from Bancóldex to those who lead micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in the country is to take advantage of the opportunities offered at this moment to undertake strengthening and modernization processes, mitigate risks, and protect profit margins.”
