The government of President Daniel Noboa, together with Vice President María José Pinto, who leads the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), has taken steps to improve gynecological care for women across the country. The Homero Castanier Crespo Hospital in Azogues has launched a cervical pathology unit focused on the prevention and early detection of cervical lesions and cancer.

The new unit is equipped with an advanced colposcope and all necessary instruments and supplies to perform procedures safely according to MSP guidelines.

Julio González, a gynecologist at the hospital, described the benefits of this technology: “Colposcopy is a specialized procedure that allows for detailed examination of the cervix to identify cells at risk of developing cancer. With this method we conduct preventive exams, follow-ups, treatments, and if necessary, diagnostic procedures such as biopsies.”

He also noted that these studies help monitor cases involving human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly types 16 and 18 which are considered high-risk. The unit also evaluates women with persistent vaginal discharge or genital warts to ensure immediate follow-up and reduce future risks of cervical cancer.

A patient named Nube R., who used the service at the hospital, shared her experience: “I think the implementation of this service is very good because many people need it and it is free.”

Women who need this procedure can visit their nearest health center for an evaluation. If required, they will be referred to the Hospital de Azogues in Cañar province.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to providing comprehensive, timely, and quality care for all citizens while promoting disease prevention, treatment, and monitoring within its healthcare facilities.
