In the context of the state of emergency, a joint operation led by the Unified Command Pataz (CUPAZ), which includes the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru, was carried out to address illegal mining in Pataz province. The operation, named “Kallpa Wayka,” resulted in the seizure of assets and materials valued at over S/ 2.2 million.
The intervention took place in the district of Pataz, specifically near San Fernando. Authorities identified three mine shafts being used for illegal mineral extraction. Through coordinated military and police intelligence efforts, explosives, tools, equipment related to illegal mining activities, and approximately 300 sacks of polymetallic ore stored underground were seized and destroyed.
Eight individuals suspected of involvement in these illicit activities were detained during the operation. They have been handed over to the National Police on suspicion of committing environmental crimes related to illegal mining against the State.
The operation also involved coordination with other agencies including SUCAMEC (the national authority for security services and control over arms and explosives), the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), and GREMH-LL (the Rapid Response Group against Illegal Mining in La Libertad).
The Unified Command Pataz stated: “El Comando Unificado Pataz reafirmó su compromiso de combatir la minería ilegal y los delitos conexos, así como de garantizar la seguridad, la paz y la legalidad en beneficio de la población patacina.” This translates as: “The Unified Command Pataz reaffirmed its commitment to fight illegal mining and related crimes, as well as to guarantee security, peace, and legality for the benefit of the people of Pataz.”
