The Internal Revenue Service (SRI) has introduced changes to simplify the process for priority groups seeking a refund of Value Added Tax (VAT). The new system aims to make it easier and more efficient for eligible individuals to access this tax benefit.
Under the updated procedure, when submitting a request, the system will display only invoices related to purchases of essential goods and services intended for personal use. These include food, clothing, health, education, and housing materials bought from establishments verified by SRI. This change is expected to help users select the correct documents, reduce errors during the process, and ensure compliance with the Law on Internal Tax Regime.
To guarantee that VAT refunds are fair and comply with current regulations, clear criteria are now applied in selecting valid invoices. Invoices that have already received a full automatic VAT refund will not appear in the list. Only those issued with the beneficiary’s identification number and generated by verified establishments will be considered.
“SRI reaffirms its commitment to facilitating the fulfillment of tax rights, promoting transparency, and ensuring that VAT refunds reach those who are truly entitled in a fair and timely manner,” according to an official statement from SRI.
With these updates, SRI aims to streamline access to VAT refunds for priority groups while maintaining oversight and fairness in accordance with national tax laws.
