The National Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Energy and Empresa Eléctrica Quito, announced on March 24 that more than 1,300 maintenance operations were completed in Quito’s electric system during 2025. The government also confirmed plans for further investments and projects in 2026 to continue strengthening the city’s electrical infrastructure.
The ongoing efforts aim to ensure a reliable electricity supply for homes, businesses, and industries in Quito. Officials said that these actions are intended to improve the quality and efficiency of the service provided to citizens.
According to the announcement, Empresa Eléctrica Quito allocated a budget of over USD 50 million in 2025 for operation, administration, maintenance, and investment. This funding supported continuous operations at generation plants, substations, and subtransmission lines. In generation alone, there were 21 major maintenances coordinated with CENACE at both hydroelectric and thermal plants. More than 2,500 preventive, predictive, and corrective interventions were carried out within power stations as well.
In subtransmission areas during the same period, there were a total of 930 maintenances performed on substations and another 353 on transmission lines. Additionally, officials reported carrying out nearly four hundred unscheduled corrective maintenances to reinforce system stability.
As part of infrastructure improvements in late 2025, five strategic projects worth more than USD 10.9 million were awarded for building new lines such as Cristianía–Gualo (138 kV) and Los Bancos–Pedro Vicente Maldonado (69 kV), along with civil works at several substations including Chillo-Jijón and Parque Metropolitano.
Looking ahead to this year (2026), authorities plan over USD 19.7 million in maintenance investments for hydroelectric and thermal power plants as well as more than USD 11.8 million dedicated to expanding or upgrading key subtransmission projects.
Officials from both the National Government and Empresa Eléctrica Quito said they remain committed “to quality service provision through planned work that guarantees reliable energy supporting development.”
