Petrobras announced on Mar. 18 that it has contracted eight of its thermoelectric power plants in the Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCAP) 2026, which was held by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE), with technical support from the Energy Research Company (EPE).
The auction aimed to secure firm capacity for Brazil’s National Interconnected System, involving natural gas and coal-fired thermoelectric plants as well as expansions of hydroelectric plants, following guidelines set by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
According to Petrobras, its performance in the auction demonstrates both technical and operational competitiveness within its thermoelectric portfolio and its ability to ensure availability for the national grid. The company said this result strengthens its commitment to meeting electricity sector needs for the population. Petrobras also stated that the outcome guarantees necessary remuneration so that these assets remain available during the contract period, estimating an annual fixed revenue of approximately R$4 billion from these contracts.
The company will now proceed with regulatory steps required by authorities. These include signing Capacity Reserve Contracts, proving firm fuel supply as required by ministry regulations, and meeting operational and performance requirements set by Brazil’s National System Operator.
Petrobras said that with this successful participation in LRCAP 2026, it reaffirms both the competitiveness of its assets and its commitment to energy security in Brazil. The company also highlighted its dedication to a fair energy transition and value creation for shareholders while continuing to evaluate strategies for future auctions.
Currently, Petrobras operates a thermoelectric portfolio consisting of 13 plants—12 of which are contracted with the electricity sector under various terms—providing a total capacity of 4.9 gigawatts. This is enough energy to supply about 21 million homes.
