Petrobras announced on Mar. 26 the discovery of high-quality oil in the pre-salt layer of the Campos Basin, following exploratory drilling at the Marlim Sul field. The well, identified as 3-BRSA-1397-RJS, is located 113 kilometers off the coast of Campos dos Goytacazes in Rio de Janeiro state and sits at a water depth of 1,178 meters.
The company said that evidence of oil was confirmed through electric logs, gas indications, and fluid sampling. These samples will undergo laboratory analysis to determine reservoir conditions and fluid characteristics. This process will help Petrobras continue evaluating the area’s potential. The drilling operation was completed safely with respect for both environmental standards and personnel.
According to Petrobras, its operations in the Campos Basin are focused on replenishing oil reserves in mature areas to ensure sustainability for the company and meet national energy demand during a period of energy diversification.
The Marlim Sul field itself was originally discovered in November 1987 with well 4-RJS-382. Petrobras operates this field with full ownership.
