The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) said last week it is teaming up with Mexico City-based Televisa,

Univision Communications and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers to expand opportunities for the Latino community in the media and technology industries.

“The television industry must adapt the diversity of their programming to meet the diversity of America today, and it starts by hiring the immense talent in our communities,” NHMC President and CEO Alex Nogales said. “We’re proud to join with Univision and Televisa to bring Latino writers and students in public policy to the attention of those who want to reshape the media landscape into one that is more inclusive of Latino voices.”

The partnership will create programs aimed at increasing diversity in media and technology. The programs will include a television writers graduate program in which participants will work on original scripts over a four week period, a writer’s database that will serve as a platform for writers to share their work and contact information with representatives of the media industry such as television executives or talent agents and a policy fellowship program that will educate individuals on media and telecommunications policy issues.

“Programs such as these are very important to our community,” Los Angeles City Councilmember Gil Cedillo said. “These young, energetic and creative writers are the voices that will tell our stories, the joys and sorrows of our very rich culture.”
