Nike has released the Pegasus 42, introducing updates to its long-standing running shoe line, according to an April 24 announcement by Marathon Sports. The new model includes both significant upgrades and minor adjustments aimed at improving comfort and performance for runners.
The Pegasus series is known for its durability and popularity among runners, with more than four decades of continuous updates. The release of the Pegasus 42 matters to athletes looking for a reliable daily trainer that balances modern technology with a familiar feel.
Key changes in the latest iteration include a reformulated ReactX foam midsole that offers increased responsiveness compared to previous models. The full-length curved Air Zoom unit is designed to provide enhanced energy return and propulsion during runs. Additionally, Nike has redesigned the toe box for a wider fit, addressing feedback from users who found earlier versions too narrow in this area.
The upper uses engineered mesh for improved breathability and secure lockdown around the foot. According to Marathon Sports’ review team, “the refined ReactX foam, paired with the new full length Air Zoom unit and rocker midsole design, gave us more spring and energy return through every step.” They also noted that while “the upper provides a snug and secure fit in the heel and midfoot,” the updated toe box now ensures more room in the forefoot.
Despite these improvements, reviewers pointed out some limitations: “Most runners will likely find that… it doesn’t quite have the versatility needed to be a do-it-all training shoe.” They said that while it excels at relaxed daily mileage, it may not offer enough cushioning or lightweight design for speed workouts or longer runs. The high heel-to-toe drop was highlighted as beneficial for heel-strikers but potentially uncomfortable for those who land on their forefoot or midfoot.
Marathon Sports recommends trying on shoes like the Vomero Plus or Saucony Ride 19 if runners are seeking alternatives tailored toward specific preferences such as greater cushioning or different offset heights. In conclusion, they say: “Between the responsive cushioning, springy Air Zoom unit, and well-balanced overall design, the Pegasus has reliable features that countless runners can enjoy.”
