The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) has secured a supply of rapid-acting human insulin until November 2026 through cooperation with the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil (JBG). This initiative aims to support more than 100,000 diabetic patients across Ecuador.
The JBG donated 52,000 units of human insulin (100 IU/mL, 10 mL vials), which amounts to approximately 5.2 million doses. The value of this donation is estimated at around USD 1.1 million.
The delivery took place at the MSP’s Vaccine Bank on Friday, February 27, with the participation of Stalin Andino, Vice Minister of Comprehensive Health Care, and officials from the JBG.
Vice Minister Andino confirmed the arrival of the medication and emphasized the importance of collaboration in supplying medicines to healthcare facilities. “Today we thank the Junta de Beneficencia for the donation of this essential medicine to provide quality care to our diabetic patients,” he said.
Roberto Dunn, institutional manager at JBG, highlighted ongoing teamwork between MSP and JBG. “Today we have coordinated the donation of insulin and will continue supporting the acquisition of other medicines always thinking about the needs of the population, saving lives and promoting their comprehensive well-being,” Dunn stated.
Ecuador’s average monthly consumption of human insulin is about 6,538 units. This donation will cover national demand for roughly eight months and ensure full coverage at all levels of health care until November 2026.
Distribution will begin immediately according to planned needs in all health facilities. The process will follow strict cold chain standards to maintain efficacy from receipt to timely delivery to patients.
Through this partnership, Ecuador’s government reaffirms its commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and chronic disease patients while strengthening public health services.
The Ministry indicated it will continue working with private sector partners who support public health management efforts in order to improve healthcare outcomes for Ecuadorians.
