The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE) has provided 42 laptops and printers to community organizations in the provinces of Guayas and Santa Elena. These organizations have Sustainable Use and Custody Agreements for Mangrove Ecosystems (AUSCEM), which task them with protecting local mangroves.
The distribution event took place at the Government Zonal Building auditorium in Guayaquil, with officials and representatives from artisanal fishing groups present. These groups play an important role in safeguarding mangrove ecosystems, which are vital for climate action and coastal community safety.
Officials emphasized that providing technology will help local organizations manage information, monitor ecosystems, support environmental education, and improve coordination with institutions.
Alicia Jaramillo, Vice Minister of Environment and Energy, stated: “This delivery is part of a national strategy that includes providing 90 computer devices to mangrove custodian organizations in Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, and El Oro.” She added: “In Guayas there are 42 active organizations under the AUSCEM scheme that together protect more than 81,900 hectares of mangrove.”
The equipment was distributed through the Manglares para el Clima project. This initiative is led by MAE in partnership with Conservación Internacional Ecuador and funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Its aim is to conserve and restore mangrove ecosystems, reduce emissions, and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.
