Ministerial authorities met with the National Economic Prosecutor on Apr. 13 to discuss management priorities and explore areas of cooperation between their institutions.
The meeting focused on the importance of promoting free competition in markets, which is seen as essential for increasing productivity and economic growth. The officials discussed how collaboration could help address concerns from various productive sectors and benefit consumers.
Daniel Mas, Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism and Mining, said: “As a Government we must be fully connected with the concerns of people and different productive sectors. Our goal is for the economy to increase its productivity and growth. For this reason, we value the work that, independently, is carried out by the National Economic Prosecutor’s Office (FNE) in defending and promoting free competition in different markets.”
The Competition Defense Law establishes that the FNE is a decentralized and independent public service that relates to the Executive through the Ministry of Economy. Karlfranz Koehler, Undersecretary of Economy and Smaller Enterprises, said: “The FNE is an established institution in our country that has proven successful in prosecuting collusive practices and abuses of dominant position that may affect the normal functioning of markets and therefore consumers.”
National Economic Prosecutor Jorge Grunberg welcomed the meeting: “The visit by the minister and undersecretary is very positive for FNE because it demonstrates how much value new authorities place on free competition as a driver for a market economy that promotes growth, productivity, innovation, and consumer well-being.”
Looking ahead, both ministries indicated they would continue working together to strengthen market oversight mechanisms.
