Gilda Alcívar García, Minister of Education, Sport and Culture, visited El Oro province on March 17 to support families affected by heavy rains and to inspect progress on educational infrastructure projects in the area.
The visit aimed to provide assistance to students and their families impacted by the winter season. In Salvias parish, Zaruma canton, 30 students and their families were affected by intense rainfall in the highlands. During her visit, Alcívar delivered humanitarian aid and offered words of encouragement to the local education community.
“I want you to know that the National Government is with you. We are that helping hand accompanying you in these difficult times. From various State institutions we work together to overcome the effects of winter,” Alcívar said.
Professionals from the Department of Student Counseling (DECE) organized emotional support activities for students and their families through playful dynamics promoting psychosocial care. The visit concluded with the distribution of food kits and toys for children.
“From the Ministry we provide comprehensive support that our students need. Thank you for your strength and resilience; know that you are not alone and together we will overcome these challenges,” Alcívar added.
As part of her agenda, Alcívar also toured Jorge Enrique Chávez Celi Educational Unit in Jumón parish, Santa Rosa canton. The government invested $89,000 there for a new classroom, sanitary facilities, and playground equipment. This project will benefit 316 students and is completed pending its inauguration at the start of the 2026–2027 academic year for Costa–Galápagos region schools on May 4.
Alcívar said these interventions are part of national efforts to ensure safe, suitable spaces for teaching and learning processes. The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure and improving conditions for children and youth across the country.
