Minister of Education, Sport and Culture Gilda Alcívar García carried out a work agenda in Galápagos aimed at strengthening education with a focus on sustainability, promoting practical training for students, and consolidating strategic partnerships with local institutions, according to a March 26 announcement.
The visit highlights the importance of integrating environmental care into educational practices in the region. This approach is intended to prepare students for both professional success and responsible citizenship.
During her visit, Alcívar recognized teachers who participated in training on contextualized curricula with an emphasis on sustainability. This initiative was supported by an agreement between the Ministry and Fundación Conservando Galápagos. Alcívar said this demonstrated a commitment to education that incorporates environmental stewardship.
At the Instituto Superior Tecnológico Galápagos (ISTGAL), Alcívar took part in a business meeting where she discussed the impact of dual modality programs across five degree tracks. She said this model strengthens students’ practical skills and supports their entry into the workforce.
Alcívar also met with ISTGAL rector Tito Gavilanes and Pablo Kerblat-Bonnet, director of the Charles Darwin Foundation. The meetings focused on enhancing cooperation in research, sustainable education, and creating future international training opportunities for island students.
With these actions, Alcívar said that “the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture reaffirms its commitment to quality education that promotes sustainability, innovation and greater development opportunities for youth in Galápagos.”
