Marathon Sports released a detailed review of the Asics Gel-Nimbus 28 running shoe on Apr. 7, highlighting its features and performance after extensive testing by the company’s review team.
The review is significant for runners and walkers seeking insights into new high-cushion footwear options, as the Gel-Nimbus line has been popular since its debut in 1999. The report notes that expectations are high due to the shoe’s cloud-inspired name and longstanding reputation for softness.
According to Marathon Sports, the Gel-Nimbus 28 maintains a plush feel underfoot thanks to FF BLAST PLUS foam and PureGEL technology embedded in the heel. The upper uses an engineered knit material designed for comfort and breathability, while updates to the midsole and outsole have improved balance, responsiveness, grip, and durability compared to previous versions. The stack height remains consistent with prior models at over 43 mm for men’s shoes.
The team found that while the shoe is lighter than its predecessor—the Nimbus 27—it still offers maximum cushioning suited best for long runs or daily mileage rather than speed work or uptempo training. “Our team felt that, especially with these updates and improvements, this shoe shines on long runs or everyday training miles,” said Marathon Sports in their assessment.
Sustainability was also addressed: at least three-quarters of materials used in the upper are recycled content, and a solution dyeing process reduces water use during manufacturing. For those interested in alternatives within Asics’ lineup or from other brands like New Balance, comparisons were provided regarding fit, price point ($169.95), versatility, and overall comfort.
In conclusion, Marathon Sports said that while not every runner will find it ideal—particularly those looking for more responsive trainers—the Gel-Nimbus 28 stands out as a reliable choice for anyone prioritizing cushiony support on easy days or recovery runs.
