The cloud-based communications company magicJack VocalTec Ltd. said it plans to launch a new Mexico-based service with Mexico’s Telefonica operator, Movistar.

Movistar’s 20 million customers will be able to take of advantage of “Call U.S.” The program will give Movistar customers the opportunity to get a U.S. phone number so an unlimited number of calls can be made and received from the U.S. The cost for the service would be approximately $2 a week.

“We are pleased to be testing this new service offering with Telefonica and Movistar in Mexico,” magicJack VocalTec President and CEO

Gerald Vento
said. “While there are a number of unlimited outbound calling options for mobile customers in Mexico, we are eager to test the market’s interest in having a U.S. phone number linked to a non-smartphone, enabling Movistar mobile customers to receive unlimited inbound calling from friends, relatives and business contacts located anywhere in the U.S.”

The service is meant to be used by Movistar customers that don’t have smartphones, as they don’t have access to mobile phone applications that offer free calls.
