The Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) announced on Apr. 14 that it has published a draft resolution outlining sanitary requirements for the importation of a cat food supplement made with tuna, salmon, and prebiotics. The product is of South Korean origin and exported from Ecuador.
The proposed regulations are intended to set clear standards for anyone wishing to import this type of supplement into Colombia, covering all breeds of cats and aimed at ensuring animal health safety.
According to the ICA’s announcement, veterinary authorities must certify that the supplement can be produced or sold in its country of origin and exported without posing any risk to animal health. Additionally, manufacturing establishments must be officially registered with competent authorities and remain under official supervision. The resolution also requires information about the raw materials used in these products.
For wet cat food supplements, an additional requirement is that products undergo sterilization at 121°C for 15 minutes. This process aims to ensure safety by eliminating potential contaminants.
ICA officials will act as Police Sanitary Inspectors during inspection, monitoring, and control activities related to these imports. They will have support from civil and military authorities when carrying out their duties under this resolution.
Stakeholders are invited by ICA to submit comments regarding the draft resolution by April 21, 2026.
