Marathon Sports released a review on Apr. 14 of the Hoka Speedgoat 7, highlighting its new features and performance on trails. The review discusses the evolution of Hoka’s shoes since their debut in 2009, noting how the brand has become recognized for its high-cushion, maximalist designs.
The review is relevant as trail running continues to gain popularity, with runners seeking reliable footwear that offers both comfort and stability on varied terrain.
According to Marathon Sports, the Speedgoat line began in collaboration with ultrarunner Karl “Speedgoat” Meltzer in 2015. The seventh version introduces several updates including a supercritical EVA foam midsole infused with nitrogen for a lighter and more responsive feel. The shoe maintains a stack height of 37 mm at the heel and 32 mm at the forefoot, weighs approximately 9.7 ounces for men’s sizes and 8.3 ounces for women’s sizes, and has a drop of five millimeters.
The Vibram Megagrip outsole features upgraded traction lugs arranged in a broader orientation to enhance grip across different terrains. A woven RPET textile upper provides breathability while an updated heel collar adds comfort and support during long runs or hikes. New gaiter integration points offer additional protection from debris.
Testing took place across various New England trails where reviewers noted improved cushioning from the new foam without sacrificing stability due to the low-profile design and wide base. However, some concerns were raised about the snug fit of the upper which may not suit those preferring more room in the toe box.
When compared to other trail shoes such as Hoka Challenger or Topo MTN Racer models, reviewers said that while Speedgoat excels on technical terrain thanks to its aggressive grip, other options may be better suited for lighter trails or runners who need extra space in their footwear.
Marathon Sports concluded that “there was a lot to love about the newest Speedgoat” due to its combination of grip, support, and comfort but advised runners to consider individual needs when choosing among available options.
