The Government announced on Apr. 2 the delivery of 100 digital literacy certificates to users of the Mega Punto Digital Gratuito Colinas del Norte, located in the El Condado parish in Quito. The event was part of an initiative led by President Daniel Noboa and carried out by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (MINTEL) to promote digital inclusion.
This program aims to reduce the digital divide and empower citizens through training in information and communication technologies. Participants who received certificates had completed courses covering various aspects of technology use.
Víktor Águila, MINTEL’s Undersecretary for Promotion of Information Society and Digital Economy, said: “El Mega Punto Digital Gratuito Colinas del Norte más que un lugar con 42 computadoras; es un motor de aprendizaje y convivencia donde se transforman realidades y se construyen nuevas oportunidades.”
Maribel Ibargüen, a local entrepreneur, also spoke at the event about how access to free internet, technical training, and ongoing support from facilitators at the center have benefited her community.
In Pichincha province alone, there are currently 70 free digital centers serving more than one million people. These centers have recorded over 912,000 visits and provided training for more than 46,000 individuals across 56 parishes in seven cantons. Nationwide, there are a total of 988 such centers.
The government says these efforts are helping bring technology closer to citizens while promoting opportunities for development.
