The National Committee on Energy Efficiency (CNEE) held its sixth ordinary session in Quito on February 5, 2026, to define a strategic plan for promoting rational and sustainable energy use in Ecuador.
During the meeting, members of the committee reviewed and validated progress on the National Energy Efficiency Plan (PLANEE), which aims to reduce energy consumption, optimize resources, strengthen national energy security, and support efforts against climate change. The session included representatives from the public sector, industry, academia, and local governments.
Alicia Jaramillo Cabo, Deputy Minister of Environment and Marine Coastal Affairs and chairperson designated by the highest authority, said: “This meeting is an exercise of strategic responsibility regarding the energy transition that the country demands with the purpose of optimizing responsible energy consumption, with a commitment to strengthening economic competitiveness and guaranteeing citizens’ right to a healthy environment. We must remember that PLANEE not only defines efficiency; it is not about ‘using less,’ but about using energy better.”
Key decisions made during the session include updating PLANEE to align with decarbonization and energy security objectives; establishing an official schedule for CNEE sessions to ensure quarterly follow-up as required by law; recognizing the advisory role of the Consultative Council with instructions to develop technical proposals for industry and transport sectors focused on financing and incentives; and continuing efforts with the National Investment Fund in Energy Efficiency to finance high-impact sustainable projects nationwide.
The CNEE is responsible for coordinating policies that promote more efficient use of energy, aiming to reduce costs, improve productivity, and contribute to combating climate change.
According to officials, this session demonstrates Ecuador’s commitment to a development model that prioritizes clean, accessible, and well-used energy for current citizens and future generations. The Ministry of Environment and Energy continues its leadership in implementing sustainability policies aimed at saving energy, reducing costs, enhancing productive competitiveness, protecting the environment, consolidating efficiency as a core aspect of development while preparing for future energy challenges.
