The Ecuadorian government has announced a new phase of the ‘Because He Is Nice’ scholarship program, which will provide 150,000 scholarships for English language training across the country by 2026. President Daniel Noboa made the announcement at an event in Guayaquil, stating that more than USD 3 million will be invested in this initiative.

President Noboa emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting citizens while maintaining strict measures against crime. “These programs are carried out by a government with heart, one that empathizes with its people. We are tough on criminals, but we must support our people,” he said.

The ‘Because He Is Nice’ program covers the full cost of A1-level English courses for recipients, removing previous financial barriers to accessing this type of education. The courses are offered online and feature flexible schedules to accommodate participants’ family and work responsibilities.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage ongoing education in English through a co-financing model involving both the state and cooperating institutions.

Gilda Alcívar García, Minister of Education, Sport and Culture, commented on the significance of the announcement: “Today we are not only gathered for a major announcement but also because of a conviction held by the Government of New Ecuador: Ecuadorian talent knows no limits when given opportunities and when doors are opened. English is no longer optional; it is now a necessary tool for transformation.”

With these new scholarships, the total number of beneficiaries under ‘Because He Is Nice’ will reach 600,000. President Noboa added: “Ecuador is changing and moving forward strongly and preparing each day to be competitive and show the world that here we did things right: we fought against drug trafficking and supported young people who believed in us (…). We will continue working hard for you.”

Registration for the program is open until March 13 at https://educontinua.minedec.gob.ec
