The Ecuadorian government announced on March 9 the launch of a public selection process to award the construction, operation, and maintenance of a 400 megawatt combined cycle power plant that will use natural gas. The project is planned for the coastal region of Ecuador.
The initiative aims to strengthen the National Electricity System and ensure reliable electricity supply across the country. The selection will be based on the lowest energy price offered, provided all technical, legal, and financial requirements are met.
At an event in Quito attended by about 80 representatives and investors from private companies in the energy sector, details of the project were presented. The Minister of Environment and Energy, Inés Manzano, said: “This project has a forecast regarding economic factors, with an investment of around USD 833 million, resources that will be fully assumed by the company that is awarded after all phases are completed.”
The concession period for the project is set at 25 years and includes feasibility studies, final designs, land management and permits, securing natural gas supply, construction of both the generation plant and associated transmission line, as well as ongoing operation and maintenance.
Government officials said clear procedures have been established to encourage private sector participation in Ecuador’s electricity sector while strengthening investment mechanisms and legal security. Strategic planning in energy is expected to support productive and social development throughout Ecuador.
More information about the process can be found at the Ministry’s official website.
