Daniel Mas Valdés was sworn in as the new Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism on March 11 during a change of command ceremony held at the National Congress in Valparaíso. Mas also took on the role of Minister of Mining, making him a dual minister in President José Antonio Kast’s government.
The appointment is significant due to Mas’s more than 30 years of experience in sectors such as construction, agriculture, infrastructure, and financial services. His background is expected to influence his approach to economic development and regional engagement.
Mas emphasized the importance of regional development for national economic growth. “We have a lot of work ahead, but we are determined to lift up the country, and for this the regions are fundamental. I will be very present in each of the 16 regions,” he said during his remarks at the ceremony.
He also expressed gratitude for President Kast’s trust and outlined his commitment to supporting businesses across Chile. “I value the trust that has been given to me and I take it with the responsibility to lift up the country, attract more investments and develop together with companies and small businesses that sustain our economy,” said Mas.
Alongside Mas, Karlfranz Koehler was appointed Undersecretary of Economy and Smaller Enterprises; María Paz Lagos became Undersecretary of Tourism; and Osvaldo Urrutia assumed leadership at the Undersecretariat for Fisheries and Aquaculture. These appointments bring new leadership across key areas within the ministry.
Looking forward, observers expect these changes may lead to increased focus on regional investment and collaboration between public institutions and private enterprises.
