Corporación Favorita announced on March 10 that it will surpass the milestone of planting 275,000 native trees in Ecuador by 2028 as part of its ongoing ecological restoration and water source protection efforts. Since 2020, the company has planted nearly 200,000 native plants in key water protection areas such as the Ponce Paluguillo Water Reserve, Cerro Puntas, Atacazo, Nanegal, and several micro-watersheds including Tomebamba, Machángara, Yanuncay, Tarqui, Jadán, and Aguilán.
The initiative aims to strengthen ecological restoration and safeguard vital water sources across the country. Between 2025 and 2028, Corporación Favorita plans to plant an additional 75,000 trees—25,000 each year—bringing the total number of trees planted between 2020 and 2028 to more than 275,000. The company began this new phase with a planting event involving ten of its brands and technical support from FONAG. During this event at the Ponce Paluguillo Water Reserve, participants planted 500 polylepis trees.
According to Corporación Favorita’s data since 2020 these actions have contributed to restoring over 170 hectares in strategic water recharge zones. The recent tree-planting day on February 20 marked the start of a new cycle for the Puntos GIRA project and continued a five-year commitment to sustained ecological restoration.
Andrés Gómez de la Torre, Sustainability Manager at GIRA, said: “When we launched the project in 2020, we did so thinking about conserving sensitive areas to protect our water sources. What we do today is for the future—for our children and grandchildren.”
The reforestation activities are carried out with specialized technical support and involve local communities and nurseries. Over the years more than 227 families have participated in these efforts—generating employment opportunities and building productive capacities in affected territories. Martín Vásconez, Deputy Sustainability Manager at Corporación Favorita said: “We are contributing new trees to the Paluguillo páramo—a key ecosystem that captures carbon and preserves water for Quito city. These events also strengthen joint work with our suppliers and business partners around a common purpose.”
Each intervention includes follow-up care and technical maintenance to ensure that newly planted species survive and thrive. Ecological restoration is part of Corporación Favorita’s sustainability strategy aimed at promoting responsible business practices while supporting community well-being and environmental protection.
