Codelco and Microsoft have signed a new agreement aimed at advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, automation, and digital security in mining operations. The agreement was formalized by Rubén Alvarado, CEO of Codelco, and Tito Arciniega, President of Microsoft Latin America.
The partnership builds on a working relationship that has lasted more than 27 years. During this time, both companies have collaborated on projects across various areas. The new phase will focus on integrating advanced technology tools while maintaining high standards for cybersecurity and data protection.
Rubén Alvarado stated: “Working with a world-class technology partner like Microsoft consolidates our leadership in the mining of the future. In the face of rapid digital transformation, we must process and consider large volumes of data in our operations. That is the goal of this alliance: to optimize the management of our assets through innovative solutions, maximizing the value we deliver to the State of Chile.”
Tito Arciniega added: “This alliance with Codelco reflects the potential that artificial intelligence represents to drive development in the mining sector and in the Chilean market overall, enabling safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations focused on people, productivity, and long-term value for business and country.”
Key areas under consideration include using intensive data analysis and AI to improve decision-making; developing more autonomous and secure operations; automating critical processes; strengthening cybersecurity; and promoting technology training programs for workers and teams. The agreement also allows for pilot projects, early testing of new solutions, sharing international experiences, and encouraging links with innovation ecosystems.
The initial term for this collaboration is set at 18 months. A joint governance structure will oversee strategic and operational progress on initiatives.
