Codelco announces the passing of former CEO Juan Villarzú Rohde

Codelco announced on Apr. 1 the death of Juan Villarzú Rohde, who served as the company’s CEO during two separate terms from 1994 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2006.

Villarzú’s leadership was marked by significant modernization efforts and initiatives aimed at strengthening Codelco during a period considered crucial for Chile’s mining sector. The company said his strategic vision and dedication contributed to establishing Codelco as a leading copper producer worldwide.

“His strategic vision and commitment to the country’s development helped consolidate the Corporation as a global leader in copper production,” Codelco said in its statement.

The company also extended its condolences, saying, “The company extends its sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

Villarzú is remembered for his role in shaping both Codelco’s trajectory and supporting Chile’s position within the international mining industry.
