The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP), through its CELEC SUR business unit, has completed the installation of a roof over the multipurpose court at Guangras San Carlos Educational Unit in Azogues, Cañar province. The project required an investment of USD 93,223 and is part of CELEC’s Plan for Community Relations Improvement and Territorial Development.
The Guangras community, located in Rivera parish—also known as Zhoray—is within the area influenced by the Alazán Hydroelectric Plant, which has a capacity of 6.23 megawatts. More than 600 people are expected to benefit directly from this new infrastructure, which will serve as a venue for educational, sports, cultural, and community activities.
At the inauguration ceremony held on the court itself, Octavio Romero, president of the Rivera Parish GAD and speaking on behalf of local residents, said: “Today, our children and young people have a dignified space where they can play sports and gather as a community, regardless of whether it rains or shines. This work is a true contribution to our development.”
The covered facility provides protection from adverse weather conditions and allows year-round use. As a multi-use space, it is intended to promote community integration through various activities while supporting health and collective well-being. The event included the first community sports match and a musical performance to mark the beginning of this new phase for communal life.
Miguel Andrade, manager of CELEC SUR business unit, emphasized cooperation between government entities and local communities: “El Nuevo Ecuador’s Government has been clear in its vision to drive projects that foster human development and social welfare. This work reflects that commitment because we not only build infrastructure but also opportunities for our children and young people; strengthening social bonds and promoting sustainable development.”
CELEC EP continues its efforts beyond ensuring electricity supply across Ecuador by supporting territorial development initiatives that respond to real needs identified by communities themselves.
