The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) has completed the third and final stage of a potable water system in El Pan, located in Azuay province. The project, carried out by CELEC SUR, is intended to provide reliable access to clean water for thousands of families in both urban and rural areas of the canton.
This effort was part of an agreement between CELEC EP – CELEC SUR and the municipal government of El Pan. Work began in 2018 and proceeded in three phases with support and funding from CELEC EP throughout the process.
With this latest phase finished, infrastructure for water distribution now covers neighborhoods such as Culebrillas, Turi Bajo, Huintul, and the cantonal center. Rural communities including Tablahuayco, Ñuñurco, Zhalay, San Francisco, and Cuypamba also benefit from expanded networks.
Investment for this third phase reached $1.1 million USD; CELEC EP contributed $739,488 while the local government added $429,485.99 for studies, oversight, administration, and technical as well as environmental components. In total across all stages since 2018, investment surpassed $2 million.
The new system will serve more than 3,000 residents immediately and is designed to meet demand over the next 25 years as population is expected to rise to 4,000 people. According to project leaders: “This intervention represents progress for cantonal development because it improves sanitary conditions and public health; strengthens local productive development; reduces gaps between urban and rural areas; ensuring access to potable water in both quantity and quality.”
CELEC EP described this initiative as part of broader efforts around its Paute Integral Hydroelectric Complex area to comply with environmental management plans while promoting sustainable community development.
Upon completion of this project: “The Government of El Nuevo Ecuador through CELEC EP and its Business Unit CELEC SUR reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting projects that contribute to the welfare of the population and territorial development near strategic electricity generation projects,” said company officials.
