The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) has begun major maintenance work on Generation Unit 4 at the Molino Hydroelectric Power Plant. This unit, with a capacity of 105 megawatts, is part of the largest plant in the Paute Integral Hydroelectric Complex and is the second largest in Ecuador, with a total capacity of 1,100 MW.
This overhaul comes after two decades of continuous operation. The maintenance is being carried out in coordination with the National Electricity Operator (CENACE), following recommendations from CELEC EP technical specialists and equipment manufacturers. The process includes disassembling the generator rotor to access and optimize key internal components.
Specialized technicians from the manufacturer, staff from CELEC SUR, and personnel from the Turbine Research and Repair Center (CIRT) are participating in this project. They are using advanced technology to monitor turbine conditions throughout the maintenance period. According to the schedule, work is expected to be completed by April.
Key tasks include removing the generator rotor for access to the stator, restacking of stator laminations, replacing stator bars and temperature measurement instruments, maintaining electrical connections, replacing the turbine bearing heat exchanger, and installing new temperature sensors.
Wilson Enríquez, head of Molino Power Plant, stated: “These major maintenance activities are carried out after approximately 20 years of operation and are fundamental for preserving the useful life of generation units.” He added that around 25 technicians are involved in this effort—including specialists from both the manufacturer and other business units—with a commitment to meet or even improve upon scheduled deadlines.
The maintenance aligns with CELEC EP’s annual plan to ensure continued reliability and efficiency within Ecuador’s national power system.
