Silver Spring Networks and Brazilian electricity group extend smart grid program

Silver Spring Networks and CPFL Energia, Brazil’s largest private electricity group, announced on Wednesday an extension of their smart grid program, with the addition of a grid reliability and Distribution Automation program for cities in the interior of the state of São Paulo.

The Silver Spring and CPFL Distribution Automation program will leverage Silver Spring’s multi-application network to enable better grid reliability for almost 4 million people in over 50 cities across CPFL’s service territory in the state of São Paulo.

Under this project, more than 600 reclosers on the distribution network, supervised and controlled in real time by CPFL's Operations Center through Silver Spring's platform, will use the mesh network technology, allowing energy flow redirection to avoid service outages and accelerate system restoration.

“By adding the Distribution Automation technology, CPFL is leading the Brazilian energy sector with a multi-application smart grid program, benefitting both C&I and residential customers through improved grid reliability and enhancing overall back-office network operations and efficiency,” Gadner Vieira, vice president of sales at Silver Spring Networks Brazil, said. “Silver Spring’s IPv6 network will help CPFL achieve long-term success by enabling the option to add additional applications to improve its services in the future. This DA program expansion is an example of this in action.”
